Turns out that shooting puppies, no matter how rambunctious they are, isn’t a popular thing.

That helps explain why Kimberly Guilfoyle seems to have come to South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem’s defense and suggested Noem — who already doubled down on the account of killing her dog — didn’t shoot the puppy after all.

“I just can’t imagine that because there’s a forever home for all animals. I don’t know what happened. Maybe somebody slipped that in and she didn’t see it. I don’t know, but it doesn’t make a lot of sense to me, so that’s a tough one to take,” Guilfoyle said during a recent TV interview.

Noem, a potential running mate for Donald Trump, wrote in her soon-to-be-released book, “No Going Back: The Truth on What’s Wrong with Politics and How We Move America Forward,” she shot Cricket, a 14-month-old wirehaired pointer she was training for pheasant hunting.

The tale was included to show her willingness to do anything “difficult, messy and ugly” if it has to be done. But backlash was swift against the Republican governor.

Noem has tried to reframe the story from two decades ago as an example of her willingness to make tough decisions. She wrote on social media that Cricket had shown aggressive behavior by biting.

“As I explained in the book, it wasn’t easy,” she said on X. “But often the easy way isn’t the right way.”

“I’m not sure which thing she did was stupider: The fact that she murdered the dog, or the fact that she was stupid enough to publish it in a book,” said Joan Payton, of the German Wirehaired Pointer Club of America.

The Associated Press contributed to this report.

  1. I believe that two of Mr. T’;s sons, enjoy using guns to kill helpless AfricanWildlife animals. Also, hunters ruthlessly kill wild animals all the time, surely as Noem has done. No offense, but the fact that 2 of his sons are trophy hunters, “trumps” what Noem did.

  2. Dig the heels in and double down on the jerkiness.
“The dog killed livestock” is one of the excuses in her favour. One chicken isn’t going to ruin her.
Then again you have had ranchers spend millions of taxpayer dollars using helicopters to track down entire wolf packs for one lamb.

Some traditional farmers still hold that they are on predator land. Any loss is their fault for not adequately protecting their herd and will tolerate up to 62-70% (not exactly sure but it’s a large percent) of their herd being lost before considering lethal measures. They consider predation as paying rent.

    • Note: The livestock loss is a b.s. excuse.

So damn tired of the “you don’t understand country life” excuse. People can live in the country without being psychopaths.
Lack of thought and consideration. Just a selfishness and callousness that is confused for “being tough”.

  3. This Mouse totally understands, often writing difficult, messy, and ugly things to show no fear of trappers or hunters, and if the rats approve, basking in the the harsh glare of the limelights extolling my fearlessness. But, like any trophy hunter, if the shadow of disapproval starts to eclipse the cheesy approval, there are term-mites to gnaw away at the foundations of society, and a mischief of rats to deny culpability. We call that a guile foil.

  4. I would not be at all surprised if the story is made up to sell books, or if the story is true – but either way, it’s terrible.
