WASHINGTON (WCBD)- A bipartisan trio of House lawmakers have formed a congressional dog lovers caucus less than a week after it was revealed that South Dakota Gov. Kristi Noem (R) shot and killed a family dog.

Reps. Nancy Mace (R-S.C.), Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.), and Susan Wild (D-Pa.) announced the caucus on social media Thursday.

“In light of recent events, we’re launching the Congressional Dog Lovers Caucus today!” Rep. Moskowitz wrote on X, formerly Twitter. “This group dedicated to man’s best friend aims to foster bipartisan cooperation and will help put paws over politics.”

The announcement was accompanied by a photo of each representative holding a dog.

“While Congress might disagree on everything, we can all agree that dogs are beloved companions, bringing us all so much joy,” Mace said in a statement to News 2. “We started this caucus to champion legislation that protects the rights and well-being of dogs, ensuring they receive the care, respect, and recognition they deserve.”Dispute over 2011 immigration law spills into SC-01 congressional race. Who actually wrote it?

The group’s formation comes as Noem is facing serious backlash over an anecdote in her new book in which she describes shooting a family dog after a hunting trip.

Noem wrote that Cricket — a 14-month-old wirehaired pointer — chased away pheasants during a hunting trip, ruining the hunt and that it later attacked a local family’s chickens, according to reports by the Guardian.

“I hated that dog,” she wrote, adding that Cricket was untrainable, dangerous, and worthless as a hunting dog.

“At that moment,” Noem wrote, “I realized I had to put her down.”

She then led Cricket to a gravel pit on her property and shot it, writing it was “not a pleasant job” but it “had to be done.”

In the wake of widespread criticism, the Republican governor has repeatedly defended her actions, most recently during a Wednesday appearance on Fox News.

“It was a dog that was extremely dangerous,” Noem said “It had come to us from a family who had found her way too aggressive.”

“We were her second chance. And she was — the day she was put down was a day that she massacred livestock that were part of our neighbors,” she continued. “She attacked me. And it was a hard decision.”

Noem is reportedly on the shortlist for former President Donald Trump’s 2024 running mate.
