JUL 12, 2018 — “We’ve drafted a bill to ban fur farming in Ireland”: Congratulations to Solidarity TDs Ruth Coppinger and Paul Murphy on their announcement today (12 July 2018). Solidarity has revealed that it will have a “Ban Fur Farming” bill ready to present to the Dail after the parliamentary summer recess. In a video posted online this afternoon, Ruth Coppinger TD stated: “We believe this is something that’s really important for the welfare of animals. Mink are what are farmed in Ireland and these are actually meant to be wild, untamed animals – not put in confined spaces, certainly not farmed. They suffer from this practice enormously. We want to send a message globally that Ireland shouldn’t be a laggard in terms of animal rights and animal welfare as it has been in many other situations. We also want to dent the fur trade as well. So we are asking people to really get behind our bill over the summer and to contact their TDs to support it.”In a tweet, she added: “Farming wild animals for fur is unethical and against their welfare. It’s a practice that should end.”Paul Murphy TD acknowledged that “protest and political pressure by animal rights activists, by ordinary people, have already succeeded in making this an important political issue.”He called on people to support the campaign over the summer by signing petitions and contacting TDs to urge them to back the bill.”We know that protest works,” he said. “For example, when we had the bill to ban wild animals from circusses – under pressure from people contacting TDs, organisations protesting, the Minister was forced to bring in a regulation to effectively ban wild animals in circuses. We think that with the same kind of campaign of pressure over the coming months, we hopefully can achieve Ireland banning fur farming.”It’s imperative that everybody makes contact with TDs to urge them to support this bill.
